PCA9515(A), PCA9516(A), PCA9517, and PCA9518 Bus Repeaters and Hubs
These devices are designed to work with clock frequencies up to 400kHz and are suitable for multi-master I2C bus or SMBus environments. They are specifically designed for larger buses on single card applications with the PCA9516 or PCA9518 primarily used for point-to-point star configurations with the hub in the middle or the PCA9517 with the repeater at the end of the star. The devices support bus arbitration and contention with bus masters located on any I2C segment. They are multi-directional and require no direction control. Operational voltage supply is 3V to 3.6V with 6V-tolerant I/Os allowing easy interfacing of 3.3V and 5V devices. Operational temperature range is -40oC to +85oC. The newer PCA9515A and PCA9516A supply range is 2.3V to 3.6V while the PCA9517 is 2.7V to 3.6V. All are 5.5V-tolerant.
Normally, only one PCA9515 repeater, or PCA9516 hub, or group of PCA9518 expandable hubs should be used per I2C or SMBus system due to the static level offset required to provide multi-directional signally without an external direction control. The PCA9517 is a two VCC device with one side adjustable between 0.9V and 5.5V to provide 0.9V to 5.5V level shifting abilities. The PCA9517 has static level offset on only one side of the device. The other side pulls to ground, allowing connection with other static and dynamic level offset buffers, connections in a star arrangement, or connection in a long multiple device series arrangement.
The PCA9510(A)/11(A)/12(A)/13(A)/14(A) hot-swappable bus buffers use dynamic level offset so that two or possibly three devices can be connected in series or used in multi-point applications.
